Misunderstood breed

Nothing in life compares to pictures and videos of adorable puppies. You can be in such a shitty mood, come across some video of a puppy trying to run with a huge branch in its mouth and your heart will melt. This is unless you are a robot and void of human emotion.
I am a huge animal lover. Animals have always been a massive part of my life.
As of right now, I am the proud owner of two massive dogs. One of them is a black lab mix, the other is an American Pit Bull Terrier.
So when I came across a documentary available on Netflix Instant named Beyond the Myth. The picture for the documentary on the log is a pit bull puppy staring you down.

I was hesitant to watch the documentary. I pretty much knew what I was in for. But I figured I should watch it and understand the issues pit bull owners face in other cities.
Beyond the Myth highlights the breed. It showcases the struggles owners of the breed, and the dogs face in general.
One of the main struggles is BSL also known as breed specific legislation. Cities such as Denver, Miami Dade County, and Cleveland all have laws banning the ownership of pit bull terriers and dogs that look like pit bulls.

It is not easy to watch what families deal with in regards to breed specific legislation. But it’s worse to see what happens to the dogs that never caused any harm to anyone.
This documentary does show the issues dogs and owners struggle with when it comes down to breed specific legislation. Even for the people like me who think they know what is happening, seeing real footage and hearing the stories of this families makes it much more real.

This is my favorite pit picture ever. (Source)

Beyond the Myth tries to educate people more on how misrepresented the breed is. People look at the news and stories about the breed and will form their own opinion.
There are a lot of people who are activists and advocates for American Pit Bull Terriers and breeds like them. This documentary shows viewers why.
I really hope those same people are willing to watch this documentary to understand what this breed and breeds like it are all about.

People who truly love dogs and love animals will appreciate this documentary the most. This documentary shows how people including me can take our lives with our dogs for granted.
I realized I’m fortunate enough to live in a city that allows pit bulls to live freely.
